Making plans to redesign and overhaul the roof on your building shouldn’t overlook some of the more intriguing and recent materials. You could end up with a roof that does some very interesting things. The cost for design and materials might be more, but the roof will never be boring or useless.
Cool or White Roofing
This type of roofing material is completely reflective. It’s white, and therefore reflects much of the sun’s midday rays. With less of the sun’s rays hitting the roof, the roof is cooler and so is your building. At night, the white reflective material can be seen from high above the building. It’s a useful feature if your building is especially tall and you don’t want planes or helicopters hitting it.
Green Roofing
Green roofing is the practice whereby you make most of the roof into a garden. You can grow anything after transforming the roof into a green space. Much of the roof underneath the green growing things is protected with sheeting and concrete so that the earth and growing things don’t penetrate the roof. The greenery absorbs excess moisture, a bonus if you live where it rains a lot or is constantly humid.
Fire-Resistant Roofing Materials
In areas where wildfires are a serious problem, having roofs that are fire resistant is an excellent choice. Made from stone and/or metal, these roofs will not ignite, no matter how hard you try. If the rest of the building isn’t fire resistant, it may burn, but the roof will remain. Ask your roofing contractor about these materials.
Slate Tiles
Slate is making a major comeback, although it never really left. Slate tiles are hewn from slate stone. They are waterproof, wind resistant, fire resistant, mold resistant, heat resistant, etc. It’s one of the most expensive materials, but it also lasts the longest. Most slate roofs can last well beyond a century and rarely need repairs.
